A resident of or a visitor to Marshall County will find several places to spend leisure time. Because baseball, softball, and soccer are popular sports, playing fields with field houses and dugouts are located on Spring Place Road, Ellington Parkway, White Drive and 400 Airport Drive. Approximately 1000 children and youth participate in these community sports with parents volunteering as coaches and team supporters.
The City of Lewisburg operates the Lewisburg Recreation Center as a public park. A nine-hole golf course, tennis courts, an outdoor walking track, an outdoor swimming pool, picnic shelters, playground equipment and an Exploration Station playground are included in the outdoor areas. A state of the art, 50,000 square foot facility houses indoor lap and therapy pools, a gymnasium, an indoor walking track, a racquetball court, two meeting rooms with caterer's kitchens, several exercise rooms, and dance and aerobic studios.
In the fall, Peewee Football is played on the football field in the Recreation Center area. Harmond Park, a smaller city park located on Fourth Avenue offers a picnic shelter, basketball court, and playground equipment. The Jones School summer program allows organized games for children to be conducted during summer vacation in an area designated by the Department of Parks and Recreation. The City of Lewisburg employs a full time director.
Rock Creek Park and Walking Trail are the latest additions to Lewisburg's downtown attractions. The park features a farmers' market pavilion, an outdoor stage, a bricked area honoring local veterans and leaders, an iron bridge, and several miles of walking track along the historic Rock Creek. Benches are placed appropriately along the walking trail for scenic enjoyment. The park is the site of several annual music festivals and/or holiday celebrations.
The New Lake and the area around it are maintained by the City of Lewisburg as a public area miles from town. Once the source of the city's water supply, this beautiful scenic area is open for boats without motors, fishing, walking, picnicing, and relaxing.
Henry Horton State Park is located on Highway 31A between Lewisburg and Chapel Hill. A motel, cabins, a large restaurant, an eighteen-hole golf course, skeet range, Olympic size pool, campsite, tennis courts, numerous picnic pavilions, and playground equipment are provided in this complex. Canoeing on the Duck River is also available through private business.
The Marshall County Community Theatre produces a minimum of eight shows per year. These shows depend totally on community volunteers for actors, stagehands, technicians, and musicians. This provides a rewarding leisure activity for thespians.
Saddle Creek Golf Club on the Fayetteville Highway and Hazelburn Golf Course off I-65 at the Lynnville Exit both offer privately owned public golf courses.
The popularity of the Tennessee Walking Horse and the Spotted Saddle Horse provides several annual shows in the county. The Lions Clubs in Belfast, Cornersville, Lewisburg, and Petersburg each sponsor a horse show. Horse lovers often host trail rides during good weather. The Walking Horse Celebration in nearby Shelbyville attracts thousands of spectators each year.
We Skate Center offers a clean, well-managed environment for those who enjoy roller-skating. A popular spot for school age children, the center is open to the public but is used often for private parties and school field trips.
Funtime Bowl is the only bowling alley in the county. The facility is open seven days a week from 1:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 1:00 p.m. until midnight on Friday, 9:00 a.m. until midnight on Saturday, and 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Sunday.
A unique leisure facility is the Highway 50 Drive-in Theatre. As one of the last remaining drive-in theatres in the country, this '50s style form of entertainment is open from April to October and shows current cinema releases.
Civic organizations and special interest groups also provide an opportunity for citizens to use their leisure time in a productive way.
